Accessibility statement

Everyone should be able to understand their coverage. We design Coverlee to be readable and usable with a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom and reduced motion.

Our goal

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA, across the English, Spanish and Chinese versions of the site.

What we do

  • Readable text. We use Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed for legibility, with large body text, generous line spacing and a comfortable line length.
  • Strong contrast. Text and controls meet WCAG AA contrast in light and dark themes, and body text aims for AAA. We check every color pair automatically.
  • Light, dark and system themes, remembered on your device.
  • Keyboard access. Menus, search, accordions and every calculator can be used with a keyboard. A skip link jumps to the main content, and focus is always visible.
  • Screen reader support. Calculator results are announced as they update, form fields have labels and hints, and tables have headers and captions.
  • Reduced motion. We use almost no animation, and the little we use turns off when your device asks for reduced motion.
  • Zoom and reflow. Pages work at 200% zoom and on screens as narrow as 320 pixels without horizontal scrolling.
  • Plain language at about an eighth-grade reading level, with terms defined.
  • Clear errors. Calculators explain what to fix in words, not just with color.

Known limitations

  • Some official documents we link to, such as PDFs from government agencies or insurers’ plan documents shown by our health plan checker, are outside our control and may not be fully accessible.
  • The health plan checker depends on a live data service. If that service is slow or unavailable, the tool shows a text message explaining what happened.

Testing

We test with automated checks, keyboard-only navigation, browser zoom and screen readers, and we review pages at phone, tablet and desktop widths.

If something is hard to use, please tell us. Email with the subject “Accessibility”, include the page address and what happened, and tell us what device or assistive technology you use if you can. We aim to reply within 5 business days and will try to give you the information you need in another format in the meantime.
